The Global Health Advocacy Incubator's new podcast explores how developing countries can build on record $255 million domestic contributions to achieve immunization self-sufficiency amid declining donor support.

According to Gavi, low-income nations contributed nearly $255 million toward vaccine programs in 2024—a 19% increase from 2023. Despite this progress, a 3.5-fold increase in domestic spending is required to meet immunization targets without donor assistance. Projected costs are estimated at $70.8 billion across 94 countries through 2030.
Featuring advocates, policymakers, and health experts from Nigeria, Madagascar, Côte d'Ivoire, and parliamentary networks across Africa and Asia, the series offers insights into vaccine financing challenges and policy interventions delivering measurable results in underserved communities. The content is intended to support countries where 14.3 million children currently receive no routine vaccinations.
The podcast highlights approaches for countries graduating from Gavi support, including first-line budget allocations, local vaccine manufacturing, and parliamentary advocacy networks. Episodes feature examples such as female mayors securing sustainable funding and lawmakers establishing health tax frameworks to expand access.
"Countries are building political will and adopting innovative financing approaches to sustain immunization programs," said a GHAI representative. "The podcast showcases how legislators push for timely fund releases while strengthening accountability systems and improving supply chains essential for vaccine delivery."
By profiling these efforts, the series aims to equip civil society organizations and government partners with replicable, evidence-based strategies to drive greater domestic investment and reduce vaccine-preventable disease outbreaks.
